The Jesuits

Saint Ignatius Loyola and his first companions founded the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) in 1540. Today, there are about 20,000 Jesuits throught the world, under the direction of our Superior General, Father Adolfo Nicolas, S.J.

For over 450 years Jesuit priests, brothers, and scholastics (Jesuits-in-training) have served the Church in a variety of ways. In the United States, Jesuits are best known as educators in high schools and universities, but worldwide Jesuits serve as missionaries, scientists, artists, social advocates, and in a host of other ministries.

An early Jesuit explained that, for the Jesuits, "The world is our cloister," meaning, Jesuits find God wherever God's people are in need.

Today, Jesuits live out their Gospel call in partnership with lay colleagues who commit themselves to sharing the same mission of Jesuit education
