Fr. Karl Kiser, S.J. - President

Father Karl Kiser was hired as President of University of Detroit Jesuit High School and Academy (UDJHSA) in August 2002. Before becoming President, he was the Director of Loyola House, a Jesuit Seminary for the formation of Jesuit Seminarians.

Father Kiser has previously held various administrative positions within the Society of Jesus. He has taught Philosophy, Theology and English as well as having pastoral experience as a prison Chaplain. Currently, he performs weekend pastoral assignments at Holy Name Church in Birmingham, Michigan. Additionally, he has held the position of Director of Religious Formation for Fey Alegria schools in the country of Peru.

As President of UDJHSA, Father Kiser is coordinating and developing investment policy and strategy, implementing innovative fundraising ideas, performance-based pay for faculty, and a faculty formation program.

A member of the UDJHSA Board of Directors since August 2002, Fr. Kiser also serves on the Board of Trustees for University of Detroit Mercy; Loyola Academy in Chicago, Illinois; Marian High School in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan; and Boys Hope/Girls Hope in Detroit, Michigan. Fr. Kiser is an active member of the Detroit Regional Chamber of Commerce as well as a member of the Detroit Athletic Club and the Detroit Golf Club.

After graduating cum laude from Michigan State University with a B.A in Political Science, Fr. Kiser went on to obtain his De universa Philosophia from Loyola University, Chicago as a Jesuit requirement, a M.Div. from Weston Jesuit School of Theology, Cambridge, Massachusetts, and his Licentiate in Sacred Theology from University of St. Mary of the Lake, Mundelein, Illinois. He is fluent in Spanish having studied the language in Cochabamba, Bolivia. Fr. Kiser has completed studies in Ignatian Spirituality in Guelph, Ontario and studied Ignatian Spirituality at Universidad Pontificia Comillas, Madrid, Spain.

Mr. Gary Marando - Principal

Mr. Marando is a graduate of St. Ignatius High School in Cleveland, Ohio. Before coming to Detroit he received his Bachelor's degree at Cleveland State University. He completed his teacher training in Los Angeles and taught as a bilingual teacher in East Los Angeles for three years, as well as teaching adult education during that same time. Mr. Marando completed his Philosophy studies (De universa Philosophia) at Loyola University in Chicago, and earned his M. A. from Middlebury College. Mr. Marando is currently an Associate Professor at Macomb Community College. He is beginning his seventeenth year at U of D Jesuit where he most recently served as Department Chair of the Foreign Language Department. He has moderated a number of extracurricular activities including: J. V. baseball, Diversity club, Class Moderator, and drama director. He has served on a number of school committees and is in touch with many alumni. He spent six years as a Jesuit Scholastic and has always been interested in Jesuit History and Education.

As a product of Jesuit education himself for many years, and as one who has a burning interest in Jesuit spirituality, Mr. Marando sees his role as leading the school not only in the area of academics and the social development of its students, but its Catholic, Jesuit identity as well. "Let there be no doubt that even if there were no Jesuits in this building, 8400 S. Cambridge will be as Jesuit today as it was 50 years ago. I am prepared to lead the faculty and students in their own pilgrimage of finding God in all things and working harder in all areas of academia for His greater glory."
